High School Students Visit Agricultural Studies Academy for Hands-On Learning Experience

Nearly 100 students from nine school districts across the North Country visited the SLL BOCES Agricultural Studies Academy (ASA) located at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Farm for a hands-on tour of the program. Designed for high school juniors and seniors interested in agriculture, food systems, and related careers, the Ag Academy offers real-world learning experiences in a working farm environment.

During the visit, students toured key areas of the farm, including the barn, sugar house, greenhouse, harvest kitchen, and the shop. The experience gave students a clear picture of what a typical day at the Ag Academy looks like and how classroom learning is integrated with practical, career-focused instruction.

Students in the Ag Academy follow a structured, two-year program. Juniors focus on foundational areas such as animal science, natural resources, agricultural mechanics, and plant science. As seniors, students build on that foundation through specialized coursework in veterinary science, food science, agricultural business, and crop sciences, helping prepare them for college, technical training, or entry into the agricultural workforce.
