School Library System
Established in 1985 by the New York State Legislature, School Library Systems provide cooperative services and professional development opportunities for the libraries we serve. The St. Lawrence-Lewis School Library System actively promotes equality of service and access to information, regardless of format, to all members of the school community. Through CoSer 508, schools can purchase online databases, cooperative collections and ebooks. CoSer 510 provides library automation services. CoSer services are BOCES aidable.
Communications and Committees -An essential aspect of the St. Lawrence-Lewis School Library System is the work of our committees. These committees are required as part of our by-laws and are organized by our five-year Plan of Service. The work of committees is most often done after the school day. Communications are facilitated by our weekly newsletter, the Booktalk Bi-Weekly.
Awareness & Advocacy - The goal of this committee is to facilitate participation in regional advocacy efforts. The Report Card Subcommittee will work to produce a document via the District Member Plan that will help district librarians see where their library programs are in relation to similar districts.
Coordinated Services- This committee assists the SLS in providing services that are originated and coordinated through the system for member libraries, especially those services which are technology-related, including Library Automation, and Online Resources programs. In addition, technical aspects of CCCD and ILL may fall within this committee’s purview.
Professional Development - St. Lawrence-Lewis School Library System provides professional development opportunities to school librarians and other school library staff on an on-going basis. Working from an ongoing Staff Development Plan, the School Library System Director and Staff Development Committee design, develop, and hold several professional development programs every year.
Resource Sharing - This committee is responsible for the progress and development of the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) program in regard to issues related to the Union Catalog development, ILL policies, procedures, and delivery of ILL, and serials management. Also included are issues related to the overall management of the Coordinated Cooperative Collection Development (CCCD)program, including in-depth district CCCD collections, SLS-housed CCCD kits, and the VRL ebooks.
